Elder (Sambucus) belongs to the moschatel family (Adoxaceae). This shrub or small tree is native to West and Central Asia, North Africa and Europe. Elder grows in deciduous forests, by hedges, at the edges of woods and by lakesides and riverbanks. Occasionally, elder can reach a height of up to 15 m. It has feathered leaves arranged opposite each other with an odd number of leaflets. In summer, it forms bunches of shiny berries with a purple/black or black colour. The use of the elderberies against cold has been published in scientific literature. They are also widely known to support the immune system.
