Elder (Sambucus) belongs to the moschatel family (Adoxaceae). This shrub or small tree is native to West and Central Asia, North Africa and Europe. It has feathered leaves arranged opposite each other with an odd number of leaflets. In summer, it forms bunches of shiny berries with a purple/black or black colour.
