Exhaled Breath = 78.04% Nitrogen + 13.6%-16% Oxygen = CO2 Car Exhaust = Carbon Dioxide + Carbon Monoxide + Sulphur Dioxide + Nitrogen Oxides + Hydrocarbons How do we know this? Gas detection in Continuous Emission Systems (CEMS), combustion analysers and environmental monitoring are key to ensuring that the world we live in is monitored for its pollution and environments we work in are safe to do so as gases can be detrimental to life. Knight Optical provide a number of optical components that are used in Gas Detection Systems. We can also provide interference bandpass filters that work within the IR, front surface mirrors, gas cells and singlet lenses and window made from Germanium (Ge), Calcium Fluoride (CaF2), Silicon (Si), Quartz/ Fused Silica, Magnesium Fluoride (MgF2) and Sapphire (Al2O3). Gas Detection Systems use Interference Bandpass Filters to identify the emission of a type of gas. Different gases emit at a specific wavelength which makes it identifiable when using a relevant Interference Bandpass Filter. These wavelengths are: Carbon Monoxide (CO) @ 4.73μm Nitric Oxide (NO) @ 5.24μm Nitrogen Dioxide (NO₂) @ 6.17μm Sulphur Dioxide (SO₂) @ 7.42μm Hydrogen Chloride (HCl) @ 3.55μm Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) @ 10.7μm Knight Optical provide a wide range of interference bandpass filters that can be used with gas detection. The Interference Bandpass Filters would be need to transmit in the infrared region. These would be a customised item, which we are very experienced in. We provide narrow, standard, broadband and extra broadband filters with a high optical density of 4 as standard, however this can be customised for you. For more information read PDF

Combustible Gas Detection - upgrade to upper class! Monitoring the environment for explosive gases most of the time you would be looking for hydrocarbons. It is a characteristic of hydrocarbons that they have a number of C - H bonds. These bonds absorb infrared light at a wavelength of 3,4 mm ( unsaturated hydrocarbons absorb at 3,3 mm ). This effect can be used to reliably detect these substances The most important advantage is that they are resistant against catalyst poisons and high concentrations. They can even be used in oxygen free atmosphere. Another important advantage of this technology is that a failure cannot go unnoticed. If an important component such as the lamp or the detector fails, the system will recognise this as 100 % absorption (an alarm situation). Most infrared gas detectors are designed as so - called NDIR (Non Dispersive Infra Red) double- beam detectors. This means, the light beam is divided in two portions with different wavelengthes. One is the measuring beam that will be absorbed by gas, the other is a reference beam at a wavelength that will not be absorbed by gas. This beam compensates for intensity variations of the lamp, dirt and corrosion. As the optics are mostly self maintained, an eventual inspection only checks if there is gas access to the sensor. Therefore much longer maintenance intervals compared to the catalytic sensor can be justified. As a rule of thumb, twice as long is OK. For plants which already have installed a combustible gas detection system, there is now a chance for a very cost- effective upgrade: The Statox 501 LC IR or LC MR! It consists of an EEx e (enhanced safety) terminal box and a sensor with integrated electronics. This sensor operates at the same supply voltage as a catalytic sensor. Its output signal is also identical to the signal of a catalytic sensor! This new innovative technical approach keeps the price in the same ballpark as catalytic sensors! All advantages of an infrared gas detector are now available for nearly the same price as a catalytic sensor and existing gas detection systems can now be upgraded without replacing the existing hardware. Of course the miniaturised chip inside the sensor cannot provide the same powerful electronics and software package as a high- end instrument, but however the new Compur Statox 501 IR LC features the most important advantages of an infrared system. So the next time maintenance is due with your gas detection system, check with Compur Monitors. The investment for an upgrade might pay back within one maintenance interval.

One safe controller for all gases: Any combination of a sensor head plus control module is a complete gas detection system. This makes the Statox 501 so safe and reliable. The Statox 501 also gives you the opportunity to alter or expand existing systems with minimum cost and labor. Programs for all gases and measuring ranges are permanently stored in the memory of the controller. The user-friendly software program allows authorized personnel to select different configurations by a simple push of a button. Easy to install and easy to use The controll modules as well as the power supply and the common alarm module clip on to a DIN rail. The remote sensor heads and any alarm or recording devices connect to terminals on the front of the module. Each Statox 501 control module has three relays for alarm 1 and 2 and system failure (115 / 230 V AC / 2 A). An analog output for recorder or process control systems is also included. Measured values are displayed on a 4 digit LED-display. It is easy to program or calibrate the Statox 501! Just follow the menu! If intrinsically safe transmitters are to be installed in division 1 areas, they can be connected via intrinsically safe repeaters. 24 V power supply as well as the signals for the common alarm module are transmitted via bus from one module to the next. All terminals are easily accessible from the front. Field proven sensors for reliable gas detection Compur manufactures electrochemical sensors for the detection of oxygen deficiency and toxic gases. These sensors generate an electrical current proportional to the actual gas concentration. The remote sensor heads are designed as intrinsically safe certified 4 - 20 mA transmitters and have an integrated concentration display. Combustible gases can be detected with a variety of catalytic beads (pellistors) or infrared technology. The sensor heads are certified "Ex d" or "Ex de" and can be connected directly to the control module, even if they are to be used in classified areas. The control module can supply and operate different designs of catalytic sensors. With so many possibilities, the system can easily be tailored to suit your individual application needs. Easy maintenance saves time and money Maintenance of the 4 – 20 mA transmitters is very easy. A one-man calibration or replacement of the sensors can be done without further precautions, even in classified areas. Accessories A range of wall-mount cabinets for a maximum of 5, 8 or 32 controllers as well as a 19”-carrier, ensure an easy professional installation. -20 - +60 °C

You always know what is going on in your plant: Gas detection system Statox 505 compliant to SIL 2 Standard Intelligent Gas Sensors for AsH 3, Cl 2, ClO 2, CO, COCl 2, H 2, H 2S, HCl, HCN, HF, N 2H 4, NH 3, NO 2, O 2, O 3, PH 3 and SO 2 The Statox 505 new 4 – 20 mA Transmitter for toxic gases and oxygen features everything that a new gas detection instrument of the latest generation needs: State of the Art components (hardware and software), smart sensor technology, “heartbeat” sensor control and complete system diagnostics on board. What makes the Statox 505 so reliable? In process monitoring, the status of plant components in case of a failure is becoming more and more a critical issue. The standards DIN EN 61508 as well as the product standard DIN EN 50402 are powerful tools to calculate the probability of a failure on demand. The Statox 505 complies with all of the requirements of these standards. It obtained the safety integrity level SIL 2. This provides a reliable database for the user to calculate the safety standard of his plant. If the Statox 505 is operated as a SIL 2 component, a so called “proof test” in certain time intervals is mandatory. All OK All important parameters such as sensor „heartbeat“, signal output, calibration, zero, sensitivity, temperature, sensor memory, amplifier, CPU, power supply etc. are continuously monitored for proper function. In case of a failure, an alarm will be triggered. Thus the system cannot fail without the error being noticed. A green LED signalizes the system status. The display and the controls are located at the inside of the housing - well protected from the elements. Minimum time and work in the field The sensors of the Statox 505 are plug and play technology. Each sensor has a F-RAM on board which communicates all relevant parameters to the sensor head: Gas, measuring range, last calibration, ex works calibration, response time etc. The sensors can easily be calibrated in the shop. For the user this means that he never ever will have to do calibration work in the harsh elements (wind, rain, cold, heat). No more lugging heavy test equipment and gas cylinders into the field. All the user has to do in the field, is plug the sensor back in. To do that, you don`t even need a tool! While the sensor is getting calibrated in the shop, the sensor cartridge stays in place and protects the sensor head from dust and rain. Trouble- free wall - or pipe mounting The Statox 505 comes with a mounting plate for either wall - or pipe mounting. No need to open the sensor head for plant installation Storage temperature
