Silicon carbide can be made in different chemical compositions. It can be found either as lower purity grades mostly used for thermal applications or high-purity grades (sintered SiC and CVD SiC) that makes silicon carbide an advanced ceramic with exceptionnal mechanical and thermal properties. Selection of materials Microcertec offers two high-purity silicon carbide grades that are particularly suited for hostile environments : sintered silicon carbide CVD silicon carbide Both SiC materials are mainly designed to be used in thermal-mechanical or corrosion-resistance applications because they show an outstanding behaviour to resist to wear, thermal shocks and corrosion (liquids and gases). Moreover, these pure SiC grades offer a high thermal conductivity, in the range of 120 to 160 W/m.K for sintered silicon carbide and 250 W/m.K for CVD SiC. Properties Sintered silicon carbide and CVC SiC have the following properties : low density excellent thermal shock...

Zirconia grades are various. They differentiate from each other by the nature of the stabilising agent which is used. In its pure form, zirconia is not stable. Magnesia-partially-stabilised zirconia (MgO-PSZ) and yttria-partially stabilised zirconia (Y-TZP) in particular offer an outstanding resistance to mechanical shocks as well as to flexural load, because of their high fracture toughness and relative “ elasticity ”. These two zirconias are advanced ceramics of choice for severe mechanical applications. Other grades in fully stabilised composition exist and are mostly used for high-temperature applications. Selection of materials Microcertec offers those two types of zirconias that are mostly requested on the market, in pressed and extruded grades : magnesia-partially-stabilised zirconia (MgO-PSZ) yttria-partially-stabilised zirconia (Y-TZP) Properties MgO-PSZ and Y-TZP zirconias have the following features : high density high flexural strength (> 500 MPa for Mgo-PSZ and >...

Macor® is mainly used for its machinable properties. Because it is softer than advanced ceramics, Macor® permits to achieve complex geometries more rapidly with the same level of accuracy. In addition to be able to be ground like other ceramics, Macor® can be machined with carbide tools which make drilling and milling easier. Products Macor® is mainly used to manufacture the following products : tooling parts for production machinery insulators electrode carriers lens holders sensor carriers Materials Microcertec utilizes Macor® made by Corning. Macor® is a glass ceramic the chemical composition of which is mainly borosilicate to about 75 %, alumina and magnesia. Macor® has the following properties : machinable good electrical insulation good thermal insulation dimension stability to about 800°c vacuum compatible Download Precision machining of Macor (374.69 Ko)

Advanced ceramics offer significant advantages over metals and plastics. They have in general good mechanical properties and are particularly resistant to compression. Some ceramics are very resistant to wear and friction. They also show relatively low friction coefficient and good toughness. It is also possible to achieve very good surface finishes that ensure leak tightness. Ceramics are all the more relevant when the application is associated with thermal stresses, abrasive particles or food compatibility. And ceramics are inert mateials that are resistant to many gases and acids. Applications In view of their mechanical properties and resistance to wear ceramics are found in the following mechanical industries : pumps valves dispensing units mechanical seals analyzing equipment Products Microcertec offer the following ceramic components : valve components pistons seal rings shear discs Materials There are many different types of ceramics that can meet the requirement for...

Microelectronic circuits continuously require new packaging technologies. Ceramic substrates are widely used in this field for their good dimension stability, high electrical insulation as well as their resistance to high temperature. But it is now possible to create microelectronic circuits on 3D carriers made with ceramics. This new type of component integrates electrical and mechanical functions on a same carrier, which gives a wider scope in terms of design and integration. Microcertec has developped a unique expertise to manufacture these ceramic 3D interconnection devices - CI3D - based upon high-precision ceramic grinding of a 3D carrier, thin-film metallizing and laser etching. These 3D interconnect carriers demonstrate the advantages of being made with advanced ceramics but they also offer miniaturization capabilities, enhanced reliability and more simple integration stages. In actual fact, the geometry of the carriers offers a 3D arrangement so that microelectronic...
