is a sodium salt of benzoic acid. In nature it is contained in fruits and berries. For normal use it is sythesized from the benzoic acid. The salt is a white, crystal solid matter, that is soluble in water and odorless. The product is not used as animal feed as it is extremly poisoning for animals. Sodium benzoate has an antibacterial effect and prevents fungus formation.

is obtaind from the resin benzoin, that is contained in many incense mixtures. The resin descends from a tree species in Indonesia. Technically and in the industry, benzoic acid is won by oxidation. As organic acid it is also contained in various berries and fruits. The salts and esters of the benzoic acid are called benzoates, like sodium benzoate or potassium benzoate. In a solution the acid forms colourless, shiny pastilles. Benzoic acid has a strong antibacterial effect, is fungicidial and highly combustible. It delays the growth of yeast and bacteria in acidic food.
