A spirit level is a tool generally made of metal, which has a completely flat surface and includes one- or two-colored tubes each containing a liquid and an air bubble. It is this air bubble, trapped in the liquid, which will allow us to carry out the measurements. This measurement is based on the physical principle of Archimedes' thrust, which means that the bubble will always tend to rise in the direction of the slope. So, for the bubble to be perfectly aligned between the marks made on the tube, the tube must be completely horizontal. To summarize, the spirit level allows us to check the horizontal level, the vertical level, and even for some models the 45° level. Using a spirit level is simple. Place the instrument directly on the surface to be measured. If the bubble is in the center, your level is perfect. If the bubble is off-center, then place the instrument on the work surface (a board or a shelf for example). Move the level until the bubble is in the center. Mark the location with a pencil so you know where to place the screws or nails. To measure verticality, place the level against the surface and proceed in the same way as for horizontal measurement. With the centre double wedge principle, the machine support height is adjusted by two wedges instead of one. The wedge movements are consistent and free of play.
