Stents are small, expandable tubes, usually made of metal mesh, and are used to treat narrowed or weakened arteries. There can be a number of reasons why CRM is needed, all of which relate to the malfunctioning of the heart's electrical impulses, which cause its muscles to expand and contract to a regular rhythm. For instance, transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is a promising new treatment for patients with severe aortic stenosis - a narrowing of the heart valve - who are not ideal candidates for traditional open-heart surgery.
