Knight Optical are very experienced within the Thermal Imaging market, including anti-reflective and diamond-like-carbon coatings used on the optical components in these systems. Knight Optical know exactly what you are looking for. Thermal imaging uses infrared materials such as Germanium and Silicon, however in there raw form the transmission is not the best it could be. For example, Germanium typically transmits at <45% but with an AR coating applied, it can improve transmission to >60%. This increase in transmission means that the camera sensor receives a better signal through the protective window. Also with protective windows, we can provide high quality DLC coatings. We ensure the coating is Salt Fog Tested to MIL-SPEC standard to ensure that the coating withstands harsh environments. The coating has high mechanical hardness and high resilience to external stress. Read PDF for more information

Diamond turning is an Aspherics best friend! Knight Optical can supply you with a custom made Diamond turned aspheric lenses. Diamond turned aspheric optical lenses are typically used in missile guidance systems, night vision/thermal Imaging cameras and other military based optics and commercial infrared systems (IR). The benefit of Diamond Turned Aspheric optics, are that lens shapes can be manufactured very accurately without an expensive tooling cost except for the diamond bit; and is cost efficient for small quantities. Which are ideal for use within the Defence and Aerospace Industry. Knight Optical offers diamond turned aspherics from a range of infrared materials including Germanium (Ge), Calcium Fluoride (CaF₂), Zinc Sulphide (ZnS), Zinc Selenide (ZnSe), Aluminium (Al) and chalcogenide glasses like AMTIR (Ge33As12Se55 ). Knight Optical can supply you with custom made Diamond turned aspheric lenses for use within autonomous vehicle LiDAR systems. Autonomous vehicle LiDAR systems create driverless cars. Whereby the system produce autonomous vehicles which can perform complex manoeuvers and drive in public with little or no input from a user. Spherical aberration occurs in common singlet lenses, which results in an image that appears distorted, aspheric lenses correct spherical aberration. An aspheric lens surface is designed non-spherical, which allows a single component lens to collimate or focus highly divergent rays potentially replacing a multi-lens system. This in turn provides the LiDAR system with a better signal quality, at lower costs whilst making the system more compact. Knight Optical offers diamond turned aspherics from a range of suitable NIR materials for autonomous vehicle LiDAR including N-BK7 or equivalent, sapphire, quartz, UV fused silica, amongst others. Sapphire is an incredibly hard crystal (HK1370kg/mm2), second only to diamond. Fluoresence free sapphire windows have high mechanical strength, thermal and chemical resistance and is scratch resistant, making it very desirable for operating in harsh conditions. Sapphire windows can be made thinner than alternative crystals thanks to its structural integrity and can operate up to 2030⁰C. The material transmits between the UV and IR at 0.15-5.5µm, and has a high refractive index of 1.75.. Knight Optical supply a range of quality Sapphire optical components including Fluoresence free sapphire windows, Sapphire lenses, Sapphire prisms, and Sapphire blanks either from stock or bespoke custom made to your specification for a range of applications.  Our current range includes Random Polarization Sapphire that can be used for most applications apart from UV use.
