Hydrophobic means to repel water. Applying a hydrophobic coating to a surface can help the surface repel dirt and residue for easier cleaning. These types of coatings also have an oleophobic property, meaning that oil and grease is also repelled. Knight Optical provide Hydrophobic Coatings to wide range of protective windows made from materials such as BK7 or equivalent, UV Fused Silica or Borosilicate. Benefits for hydrophobic are that is: Optically Clear Easy-to-Clean Fingerprint and Smudge resistant The properties of the optical component itself remain unaltered meaning it does to hinder its current application or require a redesign. This coating would be a custom item and can be applied to most of our stock optical components. If you would like to discuss how a hydrophobic coating can enhance your application contact our technical sales team whom can assist. Read PDF for full specification

Knight Optical offer a range of Stock Polarisers that can be used in the study of insect vision. Insects exhibit sensitivity to linear polarised light. Insects polarise light in their vision for a number of reasons such as reducing glare and to increase contrast. This is also widespread practice in most modern cameras to help ensure the resulting image is as sharp as possible. Additionally, recently the study of insect vision has allowed researchers to modify camera systems incorporated in aerial drones to help fly independently through dense forests by assessing light intensity to avoid other objects. Knight Optical works with many leading research institutions in the field of insect vision. Knight Optical also keep stock a UV and NIR range of sheet polarisers. In particular our HNP’B replacement UV polariser which has excellent performance from 250-750nm is utilised heavily within the research of arthropod vision. Read PDF for more information

Knight Optical offer a range of Stock N-BK7 Dome Windows, for use with Underwater Lighting. A dome is an optical window composed of two parallel curved surfaces. Domes are commonly used in defence applications and often in extreme environments such as Submersible ROV’s. The shape of the window creates a naturally strong shape that gets tougher under pressure. Using a curved dome optical surface allows for an increased beam angle, therefore allowing a greater area to be lit from one light source. For visible applications, N-BK7 with its high optical quality and uniform transmission and low absorption in the visible spectrum makes it an ideal material for underwater lighting. A tough and cost effective solution which allows for good transmission of the light source in the underwater environment will both protect the light source as well as transmitting from 300nm up to 2µm. Knight Optical are very experienced within the Thermal Imaging market, including anti-reflective and diamond-like-carbon coatings used on the optical components in these systems. Knight Optical know exactly what you are looking for. Thermal imaging uses infrared materials such as Germanium and Silicon, however in there raw form the transmission is not the best it could be. For example, Germanium typically transmits at <45% but with an AR coating applied, it can improve transmission to >60%. This increase in transmission means that the camera sensor receives a better signal through the protective window. Also with protective windows, we can provide high quality DLC coatings. We ensure the coating is Salt Fog Tested to MIL-SPEC standard to ensure that the coating withstands harsh environments. The coating has high mechanical hardness and high resilience to external stress. Read PDF for more information

Knight Optical can offer UV Fused Silica Lenses for Colour Measurement Applications. Similarly to N-BK7, UV Fused Silica has a fairly consistent transmission across UV/VIS/NIR, meaning that that transmission in each region is almost equal. This in turn means that any image or measurement taken is not skewed towards one colour, and a more accurate measurement can be taken. This can be used in conjunction with an IR Cut Filter in cameras to remove a lot of the NIR noise giving a clearer image with better colour clarity/contrast. UV FS is comparable to N-BK7 or other similar optical glasses in its performance, having a very similar average transmission over the VIS range up to approximately 2000nm and a slightly lower refractive index. The Abbe constants of UV FS are also very similar to that of N-BK7, although slightly higher. Read PDF for full spec
