Optical flats are single precision flat surfaces. They are used as reference surfaces to compare flatness of a substrate where flatness is unknown. When a high quality optical flat is placed on top of a polished substrate and used in conjunction with a monochromatic light source light bands are formed. The light bands that are present are known as interference fringes and their shape represents how flat the part being tested measures. Dependent on how many rings are formed or how straight the presented lines are is an indication of how flat the tested part is. Optical flats are used for testing gauge blocks. Optical flats are also used in interferometers and high quality flat optical mirror and window sub-straights for laser applications. This range of quartz optical flats are single-sided. As UVC sterilisation becomes more prevalent, Knight Optical can offer UV domes to house LEDs and LED arrays, as well as other light sources. We stock ready-to-order 50mm and 100mm UV fused silica domes with high transmission down to 185nm, meaning it encompasses the traditionally used UVC light sources – KCl excimer lamps (222nm), mercury lamps (254nm) and LEDs (265nm, 273nm and 280nm). Knight Optical can also provide custom domes, including with a flange for easier mounting, manufactured from UV fused silica. Also available are optical coatings to enhance the performance of the dome. Knight Optical offer a range of Stock N-BK7 Dome Windows, for use with Underwater Lighting. A dome is an optical window composed of two parallel curved surfaces. Domes are commonly used in defence applications and often in extreme environments such as Submersible ROV’s. The shape of the window creates a naturally strong shape that gets tougher under pressure. Using a curved dome optical surface allows for an increased beam angle, therefore allowing a greater area to be lit from one light source. For visible applications, N-BK7 with its high optical quality and uniform transmission and low absorption in the visible spectrum makes it an ideal material for underwater lighting. A tough and cost effective solution which allows for good transmission of the light source in the underwater environment will both protect the light source as well as transmitting from 300nm up to 2µm. They can be used as mixers, which is when you want to mix colours from multi-colour LEDs together. The light source will enter a light pipe at a variety of incident angles, which is designed to utilise its total internal reflection to help transmit light from the entrance of the light pipe to the exit. The material’s refractive index is the only factor which affects the light pipe’s critical angle; this defines the angle of acceptance at which the total internal reflection will occur. Colorimeters measure colour in a substance, for example in water. It defines the measurement of the colour to enable its identification, using the lightwave spectrum. Colorimeters are a form of a spectrophotometer. The use of mirrors in the system, redirect the light beam from the light source to the sample and back to the sensor to enable a reading. The SWS-100 is optimised for use in applications where accurate and reliable visibility measurements are required alongside basic present weather measurements. The forward scatter measurement principle and unique design ensure the output is both accurate and reliable in all weather conditions and will not be influenced by local lights sources, even those that flash. The availability of digital, analogue and switching relay outputs provides the flexibility to connect to a wide range of ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems), computer systems or local warning devices. The unique ability to switch equipment using two fog relays and/or a precipitation relay is a feature of the SWS-100 sensor. For example; you can set the relays to automatically switch a speed reduction sign when the visibility is below 100 meters and then switch an additional ‘danger of aquaplaning’ alert when rains starts.
