Knight Optical offer a range of Stock Sapphire Windows, for use within Infrared Systems. Knight Optical can offer Sapphire (Al2O3) Optics for Infra-red systems over the waveband of 0.2 to 5µm. We offer Sapphire optics for UV, Visible, NIR (0.9 to 1.5µm) and Mid-Waveband Infra-Red (MWIR, 3 to 5µm) Imaging Systems. Sapphire has hardness of about HK2000, which makes it a better choice for windows and outer elements of lens systems. Sapphire has good transmission in the MWIR band, and can be used with optical glass in the NIR, and with Silicon or Germanium in the MWIR, to form well corrected doublets and lens systems. These systems include, for example, Forward Looking Infra-Red (FLIR) systems, and thermography. Al2 O3 has a refractive index of about 1.9288no 1.9174ne at 200nm through to 1.623no 1.615ne in the IR (5µm). This pairing will allow for the design and manufacture of a colour corrected lens that can be used in broad spectrum thermal imaging systems.

Plastic materials may crack under the prolonged exposure to a UV light source… But not Knight Optical’s Dichroic Hot Mirrors! Knight Optical can supply you with high quality and cost effective Dichroic Hot Mirrors for use in optical systems where unwanted UV or IR light negatively impacts on the system quality. This includes UV and IR Sensitive Systems, medical illumination and display fibre optics. Prolonged exposure to UV light can cause degradation in plastic materials resulting in cracking and, eventually, mechanical failure. Exposure to IR can cause undesired thermal energy and heat into the system that can damage delicate components. Dichroic hot mirrors solve this issue by reflecting UV and IR light away from the component, meaning cost We hold a massive inventory of Bandpass, Long pass, Short pass, Band-blocking and Colour-correction filters. Automatic Number Place Recognition Cameras otherwise known as ANPRs; are camera devices designed to work at certain wavelengths (dependent on Country) to read a license plate’s number of a vehicle to then track it through a database to identify any criminal offences links to that car, such as uninsured; stolen; major and organised crime; and even terrorism. They are typically installed on motorways; busy roads around cities and towns; and also on police cars as well as specialised ANPR police vans. Knight Optical offers Colour Glass Filters for such an application, be it either long pass or bandpass filters. The wavelengths typically used by ANPR camera companies are: 695nm; 740nm; 810nm; 850nm; 910nm and 940nm Read PDF for more information

Within medicine the use of polarised light was first introduced back in the70’s; since then it has come leaps and bounds. How it has been used to help with imaging skin pathologies, when the skin is illuminated by linearly polarised light it causes backscattering of the superficial layers of the skin where cancer often arises. This superficial backscattered light can be distinguished from the diffused reflected light when using a detector. Polarised Beam-Splitter Cubes, Sheet Linear Polarisers, and Sheet Circular Polarisers are often used within detection devices for this type of skin pathology imaging. Knight Optical hold a large inventory of Polarisers for use within Skin Cancer Detection devices. •We stock large sheets up to 1270x480mm in some cases; we can cut these into special shapes at short notice. •Mounting options are also available. •Special Glass laminating to CAB polarisers •Special AR coatings. Glass Neutral Density filters attenuate light by absorption just like the gelatine neutral density filters. Glass ND Filters are more robust and tend to have more uniform absorption characteristics. They also attenuate by absorption and so care must be taken to avoid overheating. Attenuation is achieved by polishing glass to the correct thickness. Knight Optical offers stock absorptive ND filters in 12.5mm and 25mm diameters, and 50x50mm squares manufactured from high quality glass. Each filter is available with blocking between 0.1 and 4.0 OD and are available to purchase direct from this page. In addition to our stock absorptive glass ND filters, Knight Optical also offers an extensive custom optic service thanks to our many years of experience in the industry. We can supply ND filters cut to sizes and shapes to fit individual application and mount filters where applicable. READ PDF FOR FULL SPECIFICATION

Supplied in a range of sizes and shapes with custom coatings tailored to meet your individual applications. Knight Optical supply precision optical components to customers with Optical systems. Any spherical surface will introduce spherical aberrations to an optical system. Meniscus lenses are designed with the curvatures of the lens in mind to minimise these spherical aberrations. This effect is more noticeable with higher index glasses as spherical aberrations increase with the change in index. Meniscus lenses can be an effective compromise on cost and aberration when compared to using aspheric lenses or multiple lens. Fore more information read the PDF….

Optical flats are single precision flat surfaces. They are used as reference surfaces to compare flatness of a substrate where flatness is unknown. When a high quality optical flat is placed on top of a polished substrate and used in conjunction with a monochromatic light source light bands are formed. The light bands that are present are known as interference fringes and their shape represents how flat the part being tested measures. Dependent on how many rings are formed or how straight the presented lines are is an indication of how flat the tested part is. Optical flats are used for testing gauge blocks. Optical flats are also used in interferometers and high quality flat optical mirror and window sub-straights for laser applications. This range of quartz optical flats are single-sided. Quartz has low thermal expansion properties and is very durable and cost effective solution over UV grade fused silica. Read PDFs for more information

Knight Optical’s Laser Optics range include Thin Film Polarisers which separate the s- and p-polarised light with negligible absorbance within the coating for low loss performance. The laser thin film polarisers are optimised for 515nm and 1030nm design wavelengths, ideal for Ytterbium (Yb) doped lasers including diode-pumped solid-state lasers (DPSSL) and fiber lasers, as well as Nd:YAG lasers emitting at 1064nm. Currently, we stock thin film polarisers which work at either 45° or at Brewster angle (55.4°), both of which have been coated using ion beam sputtered (IBS) technology, creating a compact and durable coating, with a LIDT suited for ultrafast laser applications. Often used within a laser resonator to separate the different polarisation states and can be used as an alternative to polarising beamsplitter cubes or Glan-type polarising prisms. The following are the tolerances for the laser polarisers:

Knight Optical We offer Stock Polarisers used in the visible range in cameras/photography. We supply a range of Polarizer options for a range of applications. All individually QA checked and metrology tested for quality to ensure parts meet customer specification. Supplied in a range of sizes and shapes with custom coatings tailored to meet your individual applications. Linear Polarisation can be split into P-Polarised (Light where the electric field is Parallel to the plane of incidence) and S-Polarised (Light where the electric field is Perpendicular to the plane of incidence) light, where a polariser can be used to eliminate one plane of polarisation. This is done to decrease ‘glare’ (reflections on the surface) when an image is being taken, and increase the contrast. This is used often with cameras to obtain ‘better’ image quality at the expense of an image that appears slightly darker. For more information read the PDF….

When it comes to a high quality IR Cut filter, it is the substrate with the coating applied that affects the performance. Knight Optical provide high quality wafers for precisely this, and the surface quality of our substrates eliminates blotching at the sensor which occurs on lower quality substrates especially where IR Cut filters are concerned. Our wafers are produced as thin as 500μm & provide exceptional surface quality. However, we can manufacture to a fully customised specification with a wafer thickness as little as 10 μm. Our substrates for stock or custom can be manufactured from a great deal of materials including: •Quartz •Borosilicate •BK7 or equivalent •Sapphire •And many more. Depending on your application for the IR Cut Filter, we can help advise on the best achievable optic for your application. Please read PDF for full specification
