Tantalum is a shiny grey, very hard and yet ductile heavy metal from the vanadium group, it is easy to form and weld. Tantalum belongs to the refractory metals, is very resistant to almost all acids (except hydrofluoric acid) and has a high absorption capacity for hydrogen and nitrogen. In nature, tantalum only occurs bound together with niobium. Tantalum is used in electrical engineering, chemistry, in high-temperature furnace construction, in evaporation plants and even in nuclear technology. Tantalum is added as an alloying component to rust and acid-resistant steels. Tantalum carbide is used for the production of hard metals. They are dimensionally stable, corrosion resistant against many chemicals and have a very good creep resistance. Whether is is continuous or batch furnaces - Plansee has the right solution at hand. Unalloyed Tantalum is supplied to ASTM F560 – R05200 composition limits. Tantalum is selected for its corrosion resistance, thermal conductivity, high melting point, and ability to form a dielectric oxide film. Tantalum is very ductile and can be readily cold formed due to a low work hardening rate. Welding can be accomplished via resistance, TIG, or electron beam methods, with care taken to protect the weld and heat affected zone from air during welding. Because of the potential for hydrogen embrittlement, Tantalum can not be used for extended service in air or other oxidizing atmospheres above 260°C unless a protective inert atmosphere or vacuum is provided. Available Sizes: Tantalum is available from Hamilton Precision Metals as strip product from 0.0005” to 0.035” (0.0127 mm to 0.889 mm) in widths up to 12.0” (304.8 mm). The material conforms to UNS R05200 and meets the requirements of ASTM F560 and ASTM B708.

Tantalum and niobium combine high corrosion resistance with good mechanical properties. We supply them as is-materials or as semi-finished goods – e.g. sheets and plates, bars, wires and billets. Without superconductive niobium-titanium, the most modern medical diagnostic instrument – the Magnetic Resonance Imaging Scanner – would not be possible. Niobium-tantalum plays a major role in modern material analytics. Further application areas for niobium-titanium and niobium-tantalum are magnets in particle physics research centres, as well as energy generation.
