Some species, primarily meadow timothy (Phleum pratense), are of great economic importance as important fodder plants that go to feed any agricultural livestock. Cultivated in pastures and, like sown grasses, in fields for making hay.

Excellent honey plant. Clover honey is one of the best. It is transparent, with a delicate aroma and delicate taste; upon crystallization, it forms a solid white mass.

The plant is widely used all over the world in agriculture as a valuable forage (grazing) plant, as well as in ornamental gardening as a lawn grass. The species is valued for its ability to form a dense herbage within one to one and a half months after sowing seeds, as well as for its high resistance to trampling.
