Propoxyphene (PPX) is a narcotic analgesic compound with a structure similar to methadone. As an analgesic, propoxyphene can be as potent as 50-75% of oral codeine. Darvocet ™, one of the most common trade names for the drug, contains 50-100 mg of propoxyphene napsylate and 325-650 mg of acetaminophen. Peak plasma concentrations of propoxyphene are reached 1-2 hours after the dose. In the event of an overdose, the concentrations of propoxyphene in the blood can reach significantly higher levels.
