When we refer nowadays to a potentiometer as a sensor, it is important to bear in mind the statements made here only apply if the potentiometer is connected as voltage divider rather than as a variable resistor (rheostat) (Fig. 2). The wiper voltage must be connected, free of load, to an operational amplifier such as a 741, OP 07 or some other component with a high input impedance. Fig. 3 explains the terms used, such as electrical and mechanical travel. L1 indicates the defined electrical travel. L2 indicates the continuity travel which also includes the non-linear connection fields Fig. 4. L3 indicates the total electrical contact travel of the potentiometer. L4 indicates the mechanical travel. An electrical potential need not be defined for the whole of this travel. In case of nothing otherwise is defined, the fields L1, L2, L3 and L4 are nominally designed symmetrically. Fig. 2 Fig. 3 Fig. 4

Based on the SL series, the SLT probes are also characterized by an ultra robust construction and a fully stainless steel housing which makes them suitable for harsh environments. The combination of a hardchrome plated shaft with 6 mm in diameter and precision bearings guarantees highest resistance to lateral forces on the push rod. There are three different functional variants available to meet the demands of most measuring tasks: ■ Spring loaded mechanism: The push rod is fully extended by an internal spring. ■ Pneumatic version 1: The push rod extends by applying pressurized air. An internal spring retracts the push rod after releasing the pressure. ■ Pneumatic version 2: The push rod retracts by applying pressurized air. An internal spring extends the push rod after releasing the pressure. Each sensor requires a carrier frequency measuring amplifier to operate, which evaluates and transforms the sensors signal to a standardised analog output signal of 0...10 V or 4...

The UTC OPA2336 is a CMOS operational amplifier. It is operated on a 2.1V (Min.) single supply. A100kΩ load is driven by the rail-to-rail output and the accuracy of the output voltage is ensured at ± 3mV. The UTC OPA2336 is characterized by its low quiescent current (20μA/amplifier), low offset voltage (125μV max), low input bias current (1pA), and high open-loop gain (115dB).

The ADI Instrumentation Amplifier (AD8604ARZ-REEL7) is based on the AD8604 series and is comprised of four independent operational amplifiers integrated into a single chip. It has shutdown capabilities and can be used in applications ranging from transducer amplifiers to buffering. The chip features a low input voltage noise density (33 nV/sqrt Hz at 5 V), wide supply voltage range (2.7 V – 5.5 V), relatively fast slew rate (6 V/us), and a relatively high voltage gain (98.06 dB). In addition, the chip operates with relatively low supply current (750 uA).
