Milk thistle, also known as silymarin, a natural flavonoid lignan, is a naturally occurring active ingredient isolated from the dried feed of the Asteraceae family's artichoke, and its principal components are silybin, isosilybin, silydianin, and silychristin. It is native to Europe and was brought to North America by early colonists. The eastern United States, California, South America, Africa, Australia, and Asia are all home to this species. It is used to treat liver and gallbladder diseases. Milk thistle is marketed as a dietary supplement for illnesses such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, jaundice, diabetes, indigestion, and others.
