The fact that mechanical vibrations are not only unpleasant but also damaging is shown by a drastic shortening of the lifetime of gearboxes and roller bearings as well as the occurrence of fatigue fractures or unacceptable noise. The diagnosis is imbalance or bearing damage. Both causes result in elaborate repair work. While the bearings can be exchanged by the user’s service technicians, external services are required for the balancing of a fan impeller, since a balancing machine and special know-how are needed for this. Gas-tight fans If the conveying medium of a fan must not be allowed to penetrate to the outside (e.g. gases that are harmful to health), our fans are equipped with a multi-chamber labyrinth seal on the shaft gland. Depending on requirements, the seals are provided with a sealing gas connection or a grease seal. Under certain circumstances the sealing gas can also be connected to the suction side of the fan. Naturally the flange connections are sealed accordingly and the fan housing is welded gas-tight and tested.

These solids lead to considerable wear, in particular of the fan impeller. Progressive loss of material takes place, which can lead to machine failure. By means of specific measures to prevent wear, the service life of the fan can be extended. In addition to a suitable blade geometry, austenitic manganese steels and build-up welds can be used to counteract impact and sliding wear.
