It was first developed in the 1960s by a team from Boehringer Ingelheim. MDPV remained an unknown stimulant until 2004, when it began to be sold as a designer drug. Products labeled MDPV-containing bath salts were initially sold as recreational drugs at gas and food stations in the United States, as was the case with Spice and K2, which were sold as incense.

Ionic exchange polymers, when in touch with a solution containing salt compounds (i.e. ions), exchange certain ions with other ions having the same electric charge. In particular, potassium ions can be exchanged with hydrogen ions which will create a new tartaric acid molecule. Moreover, other ions, such as calcium, iron and copper, are partially exchanged. This treatment lowers the pH giving added protection against bacterial attacks (for example rettanomyces) which could generate anomalous fermentations.
