The Standard Plastic card is heat proof up to about 60°C. For most applications this is sufficient. There are special demands where a much higher heat proof is needed, such as use of cards in hot regions or especially in the car behind the windshield. Special HT material can resist high temperatures up to 110°C. Because of the characteristics of the material also higher resistance against breaking and more flexural stiffness. The magnetic stripe is the classic feature of a Plastic card. The stripe is covered with a magnetic metallic oxide - it can be encoded and read. Magnetic stripes are cheap data carrier for universal use. The encoded data can be changed in contrary to a fix printed individual barcode. The price advantage in comparison to other data carrier such as Contact- or RFID chips and the variability of data makes the magnetic stripe a widely application in many fields. There are two different types of magnetic stripes. The resistance against deleting (coercitivity) makes the difference. The capacity is the same in both types. The specification is described in ISO 7810. It is made from 4-5 layers of PVC and completely recyclable. The format of a standard card in credit card format is 85,6 * 54,0 mm and has a thickness of 760 micron +/- 0,8 mm with rounded edges. There are applications where the Plastic card needs to fit in different systems. In this case a Hybrid card is the ideal solution. The classic example is a bank card. The magnetic stripe contains data for the ATM and statement printer, the contact chip is the electronical purse. Barcodes can be read by machines and can be used in various applications:in merchandise management systems as well as an economic alternative to magnetic stripes on Client cards for example. Access control and ticketing systems work reliably with Barcodes - the use is very common. According to the purpose Barcodes are generated in different types. Barcodes for the grocery trade consist of 8 or 13 digits, the barcodes are submitted in Germany by the CCG in Cologne. In the pharnaceutical industry the so called NDC or PIP Code is encrypted in the Barcode and in the field of transports there are more and more two-dimensioned Codes used. Prepaid Phone cards display the issuing company and have a Code that activates the credit amount. This code is protected by a scratch-off label. As these cards are used only singularly they canbe printed on Thin plastic material e.g. PET. Also cardboard is a common used material. The personalization is executed in High-Secure DOD process, a logfile is created during the personalization, duplicates are avoided by this logfile and the entire process is monitored and recorded. After that the Chip is implanted in a defined field. The chip is either used as a storage media only or can be a microprocessor with various programmable functions. So called windshieldlabels with integrated UHF-Antenna can open contactlessly gates or bars from the windshield of the car. UHF labels can be read, depending on the reading unit, up to several meters and are suitable for the use in cars. Therefore a special temperature resistant material made from Polycarbonat composite material, that fulfills the special requirements in the vehicle. This technique is also commonly used in the industry. Products, skeleton container or boxes can be equipped with UHF labels and are automatically scanned during transport. This assures a consistent and automatic recording of all steps made in the factory. ID cards differ from standard PVC cards. ID cards are usually equipped with personal data and a photo of the cardholder. High quality ID cards are made from Ploycarbonat to guarantee highest stability and life. Besides the optical personalization the ID card can also contain a RFID- or contactchip. The RFID chip has a unique serial number (UID), the encoding defines the cardholder and makes duplicates or forgery almost impossible. Additional protection against forgery can be a hologram on the card. The Plastic card is usually printed in Offsetprint CMYK first and personalized afterwards. The personalization can be made directly before issue of the card by a card printer.
