A prerequisite for the adhesion of an adhesive or coating to a surface is wetting. For wetting to take place, the surface energy of the substrate must be greater than that of the coating. In particular, very many plastics have a very small surface energy and are correspondingly difficult to bond. Often the aim of a plasma treatment is to make a surface wettable and bondable. The wettability can easily be tested with test inks. Diener electronic supplies a test ink set with 8 liquids with surface tensions between 30 and 73 (105) mN/m suitable for most practical applications. There is also a set of 23 test inks, with additional gradations between 30 and 73 (105) mN/m.

With just a few settings the plasma cutting units of the Smart Focus series achieve excellent results in the cutting range from 1 to 100 mm. Even under challenging conditions highest cutting quality and speed are realised. Therefore we use our proven cutting technologies as for example Contour Cut for cutting mild steel. The optimised gas control units and torches protect the consumables, reduce the gas consumption and the costs per cutting metre.

During printing and coating processes, so-called ink mist or particle mist arise in the outlet of doubleroll systems. This unwanted particle deposit results in lower product quality, high maintenance costs, increased ink consumption and the contamination of the environment. The formation of ink mist is very noticeable and annoying, particularly during coating and printing processes on substrates with non-absorbent surfaces (films, metalized substrates or composite films). A patented double-row DC plasma electrode is used to prevent this ink mist. This plasma electrode acts separately on both particle streams and ensures an optimal particle deposit. The electrode will be connected to the high voltage generator HSG61. The MISTING TACKER system is currently used for printing on metalized films and in silicone coating units (Wifag-Polytype).

Plasma heat treatment, especially pulse plasma nitriding and pulse plasma nitrocarburizing is used for surface treatment of work pieces for protection against wear. For the treatment by plasma, the parts have to be placed in a vacuum vessel and are electrically insulated from the case. At a pressure of 50 - 500 Pa, a pulsed electrical D.C. voltage of several hundred volts is used between work piece and vessel, whereby the workload is switched cathodically. The ionizing of the remaining gas in the vessel results in a glow discharge. The electrical, positive ions are moving towards the work piece and impact with high kinetic energy. During this process at the surface the following happens: • sputtering, cleaning and activation of the surface • heating of the work piece by absorption of kinetic energy of ions • reactions of highly active ions with elements in basic work material • diffusion of elements -which are to be found in gas- into the work piece
