Occasionally also these terms are used for cartridge heates: heating cartridge, insertion heaters, spiral cartridge heaters. As a rule cartridge heaters consist of a cylindrical stainless steel tube and thus provide a high corrosion prevention. There is a heating wire inside which is wound onto a ceramic core. The number of coils varies depending on the power. In order to avoid a short-circuit, the cartridge heater is filled with magnesium oxide and compressed afterwards. Highly compacted they reach a surface watt density of up to 50 W/cm² and withstand highest stress. In the plastics industry cartridge heaters are used in hot runners in order to temper thermoplasts during injection moulding processes. Other areas of applications for process heat are e. g. packaging, diecasting or continuous casting in which zinc or aluminium are processed. Further applications are to be found in mechanical as well as medical and laboratory engineering.

In the area of elastomer technology, the Zimmer Group uses the most modern production processes to manufacture sophisticated workpieces from elastomers. In addition to the transfer molding process, in which the elastomer is placed in a mold, pressed into shape with a die and vulcanized under pressure and heat, we also use the injection transfer molding process. Here, the starting materials are pressed into the mold on an injection molding machine and vulcanize out there. With these two processes, we process a wide range of elastomers such as NBR, silicone, EPDM, FPM or polyurethane. In terms of quantities as well as dimensions, the sky's the limit, because we can manufacture almost any quantity required, from special solutions in quantities of one to medium-sized small batches and large series of more than 10,000 units.

Moulded-In Inserts are placed over core pins by an operator or a pick-and-place robot prior to the closure of the mould cavity during the plastic injection process. Moulded-In Inserts offer exceptional torque and pull-out resistance due to unrestricted plastic flow around the Insert body, and are often the Insert of choice for thermosets and engineered plastics with a high percentage of filler. The minor thread diameter tolerance is controlled to ensure positive positioning and perpendicularity of the Insert on the core pin during the moulding process. Series 63 is symmetrical eliminating orientation and Series 65 is the same body style in a blind ended version. SPIROL's Moulded-In Inserts are made from 2024 aluminium, a light-weight, lead-free grade.
