Electric cylinders are self-locking. So they do not need energy when they stand still. This makes the electric cylinders to be an interesting alternative to pneumatic and hydraulic actuators. Powerful DC motors, signal lines, potentiometers and Hall-ICs for position indication, as well as integrated end switches uncomplicatedly serve for meeting the most frequent requirements.

From here onwards, we are only concerned with the linear characteristics (linearity). Relationships must be suitably adapted for applications with non-linear characteristics (conformity) but there are no essential differences. As already mentioned in Section 2, the required linearity values can only be utilized so long as the signal output by the sensor "potentiometer" carries no current. We have now to consider the effect of wiper current on linearity. Fig. 10a illustrates the functional relationship between wiper current, contact resistance and linearity error. As is shown by the example in Fig. 10b (Characteristic 4), with a wiper current of 10 µA and a contact resistance of 10 kOhm, a potentiometer which has a resistance of 2 kOhm already has linearity error of 1.1 %. A similar situation arises with an ohmic load. This clearly shows how important are the roles played by both wiper current and contact resistance. Fig. 10a Fig. 10b

The linear rod type actuators from the RoboCylinder series are available with 24V stepper motor, 24V servo motor or 230V servo motor. They are characterized by their compact design, mechanical stability and high positioning accuracy of up to ± 5 μm. The linear actuators are available in two design variants: As a directly driven rod type with motor in extension of the cylinder longitudinal axis and as a shorter variant with deflection, in which the motor and axis are parallel to each other. Both variants are also suitable as heavy-duty electric actuators for high payloads. In addition to the standard version, many linear actuators are also available as cleanroom versions and for special environmental conditions also as dustproof, splashproof or waterproof models with IP54 to IP67 protection.

Toothed belt linear actuators from IAI are particularly suitable for high speeds, rapid accelerations and strokes between 200 mm and 3,200 mm. All actuators have a compact frame geometry and optimised cross section for maximum rigidity and load bearing capacity, making them resistant to twisting and deformation. IAI linear actuators with toothed belt drive are ideal for fast handling and positioning tasks in which high repeat accuracy with short cycle times are vital. The double slider option of the IF and the new IFA series gives the possibility to vary the distance between the two sliders. RoboCylinder & IntelligentActuator Slider Types Slider type actuators are mainly used for transporting and positioning workpieces horizontally or vertically.
