Elder grows in deciduous forests, by hedges, at the edges of woods and by lakesides and riverbanks. Occasionally, elder can reach a height of up to 15 m. It has feathered leaves arranged opposite each other with an odd number of leaflets. In summer, it forms bunches of shiny berries with a purple/black or black colour.
