Product characteristics of the centrifugal brakes The centrifugal brake generally works like a centrifugal clutch, but with the housing secured against twisting. A centrifugal brake generally does not brake to standstill but only keeps the revolutions constant. Typical applications for centrifugal brakes are roping-down devices, cranes, lifts, safety gates, and also speed limiters. Areas of use for centrifugal brakes Centrifugal brakes are often used as backup brake systems for electronic brakes. They have the advantage of braking reliably and securely, independently of any other power supply. We supply the centrifugal brake without a housing if the customer already has a brake housing, too.

A drive motor can also act as a generator. If the drive system is built so as to allow reverse power to flow then this power can be fed into a resistor, thus taking energy out of the system and causing whatever is driving the motor to slow down. Following to this the braking resistor converts the stop energy into heat. Electrical drive systems are being used more and more on ships, oil rigs, crane barges and offshore vessels of all types. An important benefit from using an electric drive is that reliable systems of regenerative and dynamic braking resistors are available to complement or replace traditional mechanical braking systems. The advantages of electric braking include control, reliability, mechanical simplicity, weight saving and in some cases the opportunity to make use of the regenerated braking energy. CSN® Braking Resistors are used for controlled braking of every kind of electrical drives. Braking resistors convert the energy of drives into thermal energy which will be dissipated into the corresponding cooling medium. Design variations with natural or forced air cooling are available. CSN® Braking Resistors can be delivered with an indirect water cooling system using an airwater heat exchanger as well. The design of the CSN® Braking Resistors is particularly suitable for use in maritime applications. The braking fluid thermocouple from Therma convinces not only with its compact construction but also with its simple installation. Just screw it in in-place of the air vent screw to measure the temperature of the brake fluid. The subsequent sheathing line can then be comfortably bent in the required direction. When the thermocouple is screwed in, the braking system is then vented through its thread. The temperature measurement of the brake fluid, along with the brake disc surface measurement, also supplies important control values for a successful and safe race. During long races or races with many downhill routes, the brake disc overheats over-proportionally. The accruing radiation heat during this has a direct effect on the brake fluid, respectively heats it up. Depending on the type of brake fluid being used, it already reaches its boiling point at approx. 140–260 °C.

The infrared temperature sensor from Therma is perfect for measuring the current tyre temperature. The temperature of the tyre and thus the associated effects are decisive factors for success in motor sports. The tyre pressure is strongly temperature-dependent. The measurements collected by the sensor permit conclusions to be drawn for ideal vehicle tuning. Large fluctuations have a direct effect on the vehicle performance and the service life of the tyre.

With the Therma friction thermocouple you can determine the surface temperature of the brakes while driving. Attaching the mounting adapter puts uniform pressure on the brake disc through the spring-loaded sensor by using a bayonet cap. That perfectly compensates movements caused by centrifugal force and vibrations as well as the volume decrease caused by disc wear while ensuring a valid measurement. The brake disc friction sensor measures the surface temperature of the brake disc. It imparts important insights about the temperature development. That enables an indication about the brake line, intake and temperature radiation. A brake disc that becomes too hot during a race massively loses its effectiveness and deceleration to the accustomed and optimal degree is no longer possible. If the temperature is too high, the brake pads start gassing on top of that.

Safety Clamping for Rail Systems Holding force 540 N Always on the safe side: The safety clamping elements LOCKED SL clamp and brake directly on the clear area of guide rails on linear modules with forces of up to 10,000 N. They are individually adjusted to the linear guide being used and are available for all rail sizes from 20 to 65 mm and profiles from all renowned manufacturers. Special brake pads made of low wear sintered metal are used for the additional emergency stop braking functions in the safety clamping elements LOCKED SL. The SL product family offers optimum static clamping with a service life up to 1 million cycles or up to 500 emergency braking operations. They also offer low system costs in comparison with hydraulic and electric solutions.

Safety Clamping for Rail Systems, Compact Holding force 300 N Small can clamp perfectly too: The LOCKED-Family SLK clamping elements are more compact than the Series SL. They also clamp directly onto the respective linear guide, suit all standard rail sizes from 15 to 55 mm and profiles from the known suppliers and are extremely reliable and safe. Thanks to the patented spring steel plate system, the product family SLK achieves clamping and holding forces of up to 2,100 N with the shortest reaction times when vented. Thanks to the sintered metal coatings and the clamping function in emergency stop (e.g. in case of a power failure), this range enables braking directly on the rail. All clamping elements offer the maximum holding and braking forces and achieve up to 1 million clamping cycles or up to a maximum of 500 emergency braking operations in the 4 and 6 bar version.

The swivel motors of the HSE series also fulfill the function of end position damping with or without adjustable swivel angle limitation. This refers to braking, the deceleration of the swivel movement to a standstill. For damping, the cross-section of the bore for the outflowing medium is continuously reduced, thus hydraulically slowing down the moving masses. The end position is reached when the hole is completely closed and the medium can no longer flow out. With its extremely high axial load capacity in a slim, cylindrical design with flange mounting and drive, the ultra-compact L-10 series is ideal for applications with limited space. Helac’s sliding spline hydraulic technology with helical gearing is not self-locking and offers both high impact resistance and high holding torque for demanding applications. The L-10 series functions as a rotating device as well as a mounting bracket and support structure, so that no external bearing systems, brakes or locking devices are required.
