Un extincteur doit faire l’objet d’une vérification annuelle effectués par une personne ou un organisme compétent, mais aussi d’une maintenance tous les 5 ans et d’une révision complète tous les 10 ans. L'extincteur doit être marqué d’une étiquette clairement identifiable et plombé par la personne ou l’organisme ayant réalisé l'intervention. Selon la norme NF S61-919, les années et mois des vérifications doivent apparaître sur l’étiquette de l'extincteur.
