...Decanters or thickeners are used in the treatment of water with a high content of suspended solids. Their purpose is to settle the sludge received from the digester. They separate the water from the sludge or sediments that settle at the bottom for later removal. Their conical shape facilitates the decantation process. The mixed water enters through the calming bell, where any potential turbulence is eliminated. The waters settle, and the clarified water rises to the surface, where it exits through a channel known as the "Thomson weir." The cones can be manufactured at angles of 45° and 60°.
