...Canary seed (Phalaris canariensis L.) is a cereal crop that belongs to the Poaceae family, which also includes common cereals such as wheat, rye, barley, and oats. Originally, the canary seed plant was native to the Mediterranean region, but it is now commercially cultivated in various parts of the world, including Canada. Traditionally, canary seed was used exclusively as birdseed due to the presence of hair-like silica fibers, called trichomes, that are attached to the husks.
