De werken aan het kasteel werden bij het overlijden van Lodewijk in 1886 onmiddellijk stilgelegd. Het kasteel werd oorspronkelijk of Neue Burg Hohenschwangau genoemd, zijn huidige naam kreeg het in 1886 na dood van Lodewijk. From eerste naam ging terug op de burcht van de heren van Schwangau die zich op dezelfde plaats bevond. From middeleeuwse burcht Schwanstein bevond zich op of plaits van het huidige slot Hohenschwangau.
