... fundamental function of an eddy current sensor is one-dimensional distance measurement, based on a three-dimensional electromagnetic field. If this field collides with measurement-irrelevant objects, significant errors occur. This effect is referred to as pre-damping. The influence of pre-damping must be taken into account, especially when the sensor is used in confined spaces. This source of error is due to the geometric shape of the measuring electromagnetic field.
