MOSH (Mineral Oil Saturated Hydrocarbon), chain and ring-shaped. MOAH (Mineral Oil Aromatic Hydrocarbon), predominately alkylated polycyclic. MOSH and MOAH are mineral oils commonly used in industrial inks, notably used for printing newspapers. Â Since newspapers form a significant part of the paper/carton recycling stream, recycled paperboard often contains a mixture of MOSH and MOAH. Â A potential health hazard if ingested, regulations exist concerning the migration of MOSH into foodstuffs. Although not yet directly regulated, MOAH typically contains components that are known to be carcinogens. A hidden health concern in recycled paperboard Paperboard used for food packaging is commonly made of recycled paper products. Â The concern is that residual mineral oil inks in the recyclate may migrate into food, either from the carton box itself or from the outer carton box used for shipping. Â Using virgin paperboard for food packaging is a temporary solution, but supplies are limited.

The gas barrier properties of an EVALâ„¢ layer ensure that the flavour and the quality of the food are well preserved for an extended period of time. An EVALâ„¢ layer also keeps the Modified Atmosphere and aromas inside the package, extending the shelf life of fresh food. EVALâ„¢ offers the following benefits: outstanding gas barrier properties prevents oxygen from penetrating the package gives fresh food longer shelf life without antioxidants locks aromas in extends shelf life protects sensitive vitamin content protects against oustside odour and contamination like MOSH/MOAH mineral oils

As pharmaceutical architecture becomes increasingly complex, so does its sensitivity to oxygen and contamination. EVALâ„¢provides superior oxygen and chemical barriers that offer safe and transparent alternatives to PAN, PVDC and aluminium foil. Â Add EVALâ„¢ barrier to a wide range of packaging options from pouches, SUP and overwrap to bottles to formed push-through packs. For the most sensitive applications, unique oxygen scavenging EVALâ„¢, adds extra safety and extends shelf life by reducing oxygen ingress to zero.

Pre-insulated pipes are incresingly popular for centralised and energy efficient district heating and cooling systems. Â A central service pipe is surrounded by PUR foam insulation and a durable HDPE outer cladding. Adding an EVALâ„¢ layer to the pipe structure helps extend system service life, by maintaining insulation efficiency and structural integrity. Â EVALâ„¢ helps make sure pre-insulated pipe systems performs not only longer, but more efficiently as well.

The excellent barrier properties and the chemical resistance of EVALâ„¢ resins make them suitable for several industrial applications. The chemical resistance of EVALâ„¢ ensures the effectiveness of the barrier needed for chemical packaging material for instance. The outstanding oxygen barrier of EVALâ„¢ helps to minimise the oxygen permeation of heating pipes with excellent ageing resistance and long-term thermal stability. EVALâ„¢ offers the following benefits: outstanding gas barrier properties excellent resistance to chemicals long-term thermal stability flexibility

Very thin layers of EVAL™ can be coated directly onto paperboard, providing an effective barrier layer against MOSH/MOAH migration. We recommend the EVAL™ F104B and the EVAL™ E105B as the standard resins for the coextrusion coating while the EVAL™ C109B will enable to produce lower uniform thickness at higher processing speed. Food packaging should not only keep oxygen out and lock aroma and MAP gases in, but it should also look attractive at the point of purchase to give customers an extra incentive. Packaging has to be light in weight yet strong enough to maintain all its powerful characteristics during transport or handling. Food that is presented in cups made of thin, crystal-clear plastic, looks particularly appetising. Crystal-clear barrier cups and trays are a fast-growing segment in the packaging market. The most important requirement for these thermoformed sheet packaging is that it protects the flavour of the contents, keeping it fresh for a long period of time, even in non-refrigerated conditions. Kuraray has especially developed EVALâ„¢ types T and J to provide an excellent oxygen barrier and a good transparency and to ensure that the food retains its flavour and colour for a long period of time. Even under deep forming conditions, these two EVALâ„¢ types provide a good and even layer distribution, which makes them particularly suited for thermoformed packaging applications. Coextruded multilayer thermoformed cups with an oxygen barrier layer of EVOH can easily be pasteurised and show a remarkable resistance against deformation upon thermal treatment. What an EVALâ„¢ barrier layer offers: keeps o

Traditionally packaged in heavy glass bottles, plastic sauce and liquid packaging is expected to be light weight and sharply reduce the risk of breakage during processing, handlign and transport. LDPE, HDPE and PP however do not provide enough protection from oxygen to avoid discolouration and the degradation of vitamins. High barrier Bottle and Tube packaging with EVALâ„¢ blocks oxygen ingress, extending shelf life and ensuring vitamen content. Â Tomato-based sauces remain fresh and keep their appetising red colour, without the need for added antioxidants. All plastic barrier bottles and tubes are also flexible and easy to squeeze without losing its shape, even after frequent usage. What an EVALâ„¢ barrier layer offers: prevents penetration of oxygen, which could cause premature spoilage of the product ensures that all the vitamins, aroma substances and the highly oxidation-sensitive ingredients and fatty acids are well preserved no oxygen-related discoloration of tomato-based pro

Kuraray offers EVAL resins for the medical and pharmaceutical industry for the production of either transparent or opaque films suitable for use in form-fill-seal equipment or for preformed packages. Highest oxygen barrier thermoplastic resin available Excellent thermoformability Halogen-free chemistry - can be easily extruded and safely incinerated Recyclable with existing infrastructure FDA and USP Class VI compliant Adding layers of other specialised materials can result in sophisticated, high-performance structures. While 5-layer coextruded barrier structures are commonly produced, structures of 7 or more layers are often more effective concerning both performance and cost. In the structures below, EVAL provides the oxygen and contamination barrier, and cyclic olefin copolymers (COCs) provides water vapor barrier.  The result is an extremely performant blister pack that is free of both halogen and chlorine.
