The Company Formation Hans Fankhauser's father was a woodcutter and a well-known basket weaver. From him, the self-taught craftsman inherited his expertise in wood. Together with his son Christian, a carpenter, he crafted wooden paneling, a wooden table, and chairs for the living room, all styled in a rustic, traditional manner. With so much wood around, the idea of a wooden ashtray eventually emerged. Made from local birch wood, harvested at the right lunar phase—a knowledge passed down to him by his father. What started as a fun project for personal use garnered so much attention that the trained butcher—who earned his living as a grinder at Swarovski—soon began making wooden ashtrays upon request for friends and acquaintances. Thus, a new idea was born, as wooden ashtrays and many new items that kept coming became a small business. To preserve the unique character of each piece, the wood is processed as naturally as possible, making every creation one of a kind. Upon request, the wooden ashtray maker also engraves designs or takes on custom orders like 10 or 20-piece shot glass sets, etc., and the uniquely rustic wooden clocks are particularly popular.
