Description

Babassu oil (Attalea speciosa) INCI: Orbignya oleifera seed oil. Babassu oil (Attalea speciosa, Orbignya oleifera, Babassu) is a type of palm tree belonging to the Arecaceae family (Palmaceae). Babasu is the oil extracted from the kernel in the fruit of the babassu palm tree. Babasu is an extremely important multifunctional tree, producing food, medicine and a wide range of other materials for the local population. It is also a very important oil producing crop in South America. The nuts are freed from the hard endocarps to extract oil for use in cooking. Babasu oil is also an ingredient in some hair conditioners and body lotions, while the cake is sold as bait for shrimp traps. The hard wooden shell that surrounds the nuts is an excellent fuel. The leaves are used for thatching and for making mats and baskets. Thanks to the high lipid content of babassu oil, it improves the condition of dry and tangled hair, making it alive, shiny and silky.
