The technology for building ice rinks has been known since the early 20th century. At that time, ice rinks were almost exclusively cooled directly with ammonia. Ammonia evaporates in a steel piping system embedded in a concrete slab. However, this method has a significant drawback. First, the entire concrete base must be frozen through. This requires more energy, which must be provided by a higher-capacity refrigeration unit. Such chillers are considerably more expensive to purchase, and operating costs are also higher. Furthermore, there is always an increased operational risk with an ammonia system, and the necessary safety measures incur additional avoidable costs. In 1981, our company patriarch and engineer Kaveh Hakim-Elahi, as part of a pilot project funded by the Vienna Research Promotion Fund, developed the first indirectly cooled ice rink using his patented "double absorber system"...
