"Origin of the date The date is a stone fruit of the date palm (Phoenix dactylifera), which can be eaten fresh or dried. Stone fruits are fruits with a hard, stony core or kernel. The date is a cylindrical fruit, 5 to 7 centimetres long. Dates grow in large bunches on these trees and they are harvested in November and December. Around 30 dates can grow on these bunches and between 20 and 150 kilos of dates can be harvested per tree. Cultivation began in the Middle East some 3,000 years ago. Date palms like a dry climate with moist soil. There are as many as 400 varieties of dates. These dried date pieces from Pakistan are available all year round. Dried dates are rich in vitamins A and B, iron, magnesium and phosphorus. Use Date pieces can be eaten as a snack and in the kitchen, dates combine well with nuts and cream cheese. Also, these pieces can be processed in desserts and with various meat and fish dishes."

A large, mildly-vigorous, upright tree that gives fairly productive yields. Easy to grow, with a medium growth rate. Very little pruning is recommended. A late bearer upon planting and also a late-leafing variety, thus protected against late spring frosts. Thrives best in full sun. POLLINATORS: Self-fertile, but gives amazing results when planted near another variety (particularly when the tree is young), such as Chandler. Often used as a pollinator for Chandler. FRUIT APPEARANCE: A flattened shape walnut with a good caliber. A medium-thin, well-sealed shell. The kernel is light in color as well as in weight. Good taste, strong nut, sweet flavor.
