Knight Optical can offer Lithium Fluoride Lenses for use within UV Applications. We supply a range of lithium fluoride lenses for a range of applications. All individually QA checked and metrology tested for quality to ensure parts meet customer specification. Supplied in a range of sizes and shapes with custom coatings tailored to meet your individual applications. Knight Optical supply precision optical components to customers using UV optics such as UV lasers. UV lasers are beneficial in some applications as opposed to longer wavelengths such as infrared or visible light as they do not heat the areas around the target. This allows the laser the cut materials by breaking atomic bonds, rather than melting the material. Due to the large band gap for Lithium fluoride, it’s crystals are more transmittive to short wavelength UV radiation than any other material and are ideal for use in X-Ray monochromators, as for use in VUV, UV, Vis and IR spectrums. Knight Optical can offer UV Fused Silica Lenses for Solid State Laser applications. UV FS is a prime choice for lenses in use with Solid State Lasers due to its consistently high transmission in the UV/VIS/NIR regions. This means that it can be used with a range of different laser types, such as Titanium-doped sapphire (tuneable to 660-1080nm) or Alexandrite (tuneable to 700-820nm) with very little change in performance. UV FS is comparable to N-BK7 or other similar optical glasses in its performance, having a very similar average transmission over the VIS range up to approximately 2000nm and a slightly lower refractive index. The Abbe constants of UV FS are also very similar to that of N-BK7, although slightly higher. Read PDF for full specification

Knight Optical provide a wide range of optical components present in a spectrometers, specifically mirrors and prisms with a UV Aluminium coating to enable the detection of UV wavelengths from 180nm. UV wavelengths can be hard to detect without the use of this coating and can make results inaccurate. Knight Optical UV Aluminium coating allows wavelengths between 180-650nm to reflection at an average of of 85% which is not achieved with Enhanced Aluminium which cuts on at 400nm and primarily for the visible region and above. The coating can be applied to Prisms and Mirrors, either from stock or custom. It is also worth noting that the coating has a protective layer which improves resistance to scratching and improves durability making it easier to clean. Read PDF for more details

Knight Optical offer a range of Stock Achromatic Doublet Lenses for use within Holography. Holography can be said to be a photographic recording of a light field, like an audio recording. This recording is typically 3 dimensional and does not require the use of any special equipment e.g. glasses or headset to view. These images are produced using laser light which are passed through a recording medium which “records” the depth an arrangement of the final image. Achromatic Doublets are used in holographic systems & correct for chromatic aberrations which exist in singlet lenses. This is when different wavelengths of light refract at different rates. The doublet lens helps to correct this by facilitating the focusing of the light to the same point. In holographic systems the aim is to form an image which is as close to real life as possible. Therefore, it is critical for the image to be as clear as possible and free from distortions and aberrations. Read PDF for more info

Knight Optical’s Laser Optics range include Thin Film Polarisers which separate the s- and p-polarised light with negligible absorbance within the coating for low loss performance. The laser thin film polarisers are optimised for 515nm and 1030nm design wavelengths, ideal for Ytterbium (Yb) doped lasers including diode-pumped solid-state lasers (DPSSL) and fiber lasers, as well as Nd:YAG lasers emitting at 1064nm. Currently, we stock thin film polarisers which work at either 45° or at Brewster angle (55.4°), both of which have been coated using ion beam sputtered (IBS) technology, creating a compact and durable coating, with a LIDT suited for ultrafast laser applications. Often used within a laser resonator to separate the different polarisation states and can be used as an alternative to polarising beamsplitter cubes or Glan-type polarising prisms. The following are the tolerances for the laser polarisers:

Optical flats are single precision flat surfaces. They are used as reference surfaces to compare flatness of a substrate where flatness is unknown. When a high quality optical flat is placed on top of a polished substrate and used in conjunction with a monochromatic light source light bands are formed. The light bands that are present are known as interference fringes and their shape represents how flat the part being tested measures. Dependent on how many rings are formed or how straight the presented lines are is an indication of how flat the tested part is. Optical flats are used for testing gauge blocks. Optical flats are also used in interferometers and high quality flat optical mirror and window sub-straights for laser applications. This range of quartz optical flats are single-sided. Quartz has low thermal expansion properties and is very durable and cost effective solution over UV grade fused silica. Read PDFs for more information

Binoculars and Periscopes invert an image to make an object appear closer. There are two types of prisms that can be used for binoculars: Porro and Roof Prisms. Porro prisms are used in a pair to create an optical path. The image would pass through the first prism and which then inverts the image, the second prism then flips the image, so it is making the distant object appear closer. Roof prisms work in a similar fashion however are one prism and this design performs in the same way. Used particularly for smaller compact spaces as there are aligned in one piece to its objective lenses. Knight Optical’s Porro and Roof Prisms are available from stock, manufactured from high quality BK-7 or equivalent. They are also available to custom specifications with our capabilities for the two types: •General Dimensions: 5mm to 300mm+ •Angular tolerance: <3arcseconds •Surface form: <1/10th wave @ 633nm •Surface quality: 10:5 •Coating options: AR or Mirror Read PDF for Info

Knight Optical can supply you with custom made Diamond turned aspheric lenses for use within autonomous vehicle LiDAR systems. Autonomous vehicle LiDAR systems create driverless cars. Whereby the system produce autonomous vehicles which can perform complex manoeuvers and drive in public with little or no input from a user. Spherical aberration occurs in common singlet lenses, which results in an image that appears distorted, aspheric lenses correct spherical aberration. An aspheric lens surface is designed non-spherical, which allows a single component lens to collimate or focus highly divergent rays potentially replacing a multi-lens system. This in turn provides the LiDAR system with a better signal quality, at lower costs whilst making the system more compact. Knight Optical offers diamond turned aspherics from a range of suitable NIR materials for autonomous vehicle LiDAR including N-BK7 or equivalent, sapphire, quartz, UV fused silica, amongst others. These dispersing equilateral dispersing prisms have a very simple triangular cross section. Equilateral dispersion prisms are commonly used for wavelength separations, i.e. refracting white light into a rainbow pattern effect. Depending on the material used equilateral dispersion prisms can be used over a wide range of wavelengths. We offer UV Fused silica prisms for use in the ultra-violet wavelength from 170nm and other high index materials which are used for visible applications. Antireflective coatings are applied to most of our high index grade of equilateral dispersion prisms as high index material is sceptical to staining and corrosion which anti-reflective coatings eliminate. Antireflective coatings also help to improve output of the light as they prevent light loss due to surface reflection. The exit beam is in general at an angle to the input beam, this angle depending on the prism material, the wavelength and the incidence angle READ PDF FOR MORE INFO

Knight Optical supply stock and custom deviation penta prisms that cover the visual and NIR range. Deviation prisms are an optical component that will redirect a light beam into another known angle relative to the incoming beam. The penta-prism is a deviation prism which is used in cameras with a movable mirror that bends the beam vertical onto the focus graticule. The penta-prism provides a 90° deviation of the beam from the focus plane and, via an eyepiece, the user can aim the camera along the same axis as the beam that is focused onto the detector, electronic or wet film. Deviations through other angles can be accomplished using, for example, abbe constant deviation, littrow, and wadsworth prisms. Read PDF for more info

Knight Optical can offer transmit and receive windows and mirrors for LIDAR systems using visible, NIR (0.9 to 1.5µm) and Mid-Waveband Infra-Red (MWIR, 3 to 5µm) light. Since the 1960s, scientists have used LIDAR (light detection and ranging) to study the atmosphere. Short pulses of laser light are used to detect particles or gases in the atmosphere, like a radar bounces radio waves off rain drops in clouds. A telescope collects and measures reflected laser radiation, like a radar dish collects the radar signal, leading to a profile of the atmosphere's structure along the path of the laser beam. Researchers can then determine the location, distribution, and nature of atmospheric particles and molecular species using an advanced LIDAR method called the Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL) technique. Glass Neutral Density filters attenuate light by absorption just like the gelatine neutral density filters. Glass ND Filters are more robust and tend to have more uniform absorption characteristics. They also attenuate by absorption and so care must be taken to avoid overheating. Attenuation is achieved by polishing glass to the correct thickness. Knight Optical offers stock absorptive ND filters in 12.5mm and 25mm diameters, and 50x50mm squares manufactured from high quality glass. Each filter is available with blocking between 0.1 and 4.0 OD and are available to purchase direct from this page. In addition to our stock absorptive glass ND filters, Knight Optical also offers an extensive custom optic service thanks to our many years of experience in the industry. We can supply ND filters cut to sizes and shapes to fit individual application and mount filters where applicable. READ PDF FOR FULL SPECIFICATION

Knight Optical offer a range of Stock Polarisers that can be used in the visible range for use with cameras/photography. Linear Polarisation can be split into P-Polarised (Light where the electric field is Parallel to the plane of incidence) and S-Polarised (Light where the electric field is Perpendicular to the plane of incidence) light, where a polariser can be used to eliminate one plane of polarisation. This is done to decrease ‘glare’ (reflections on the surface) when an image is being taken, and increase the contrast. This is used often with cameras to obtain ‘better’ image quality at the expense of an image that appears slightly darker. Knight Optical also keep stock a UV and NIR range of sheet polarisers, for use with cameras outside of the typical visible range. These Linear Polarisers are available with single-sheet transmissions in the range of 22-44% and also in a range of sizes. Read PDF for more information

Knight Optical offer a range of Stock Achromatic Doublet Lenses for use within Light Engines. Light engines are used for applications such as fibre optic lighting displays & in diagnostic tools like western blots & polymerase chain reaction systems. These Light Engines are typically able to produce changing colour displays. Within the light engine are a range of lenses & filters. The lenses help to homogenise and collimate the light, ensuring for a crisp high-quality beam output. Achromatic Doublets are typically used in light engine systems & correct for chromatic aberrations which exist in singlet lenses. This is when different wavelengths of light refract at different rates. The doublet lens helps to correct this by facilitating the focusing of the light to the same point.
