Laser welding is one of the earliest applications of lasers in the manufacturing industry. Following the invention of pulsed solid-state lasers, they were almost immediately used for micro-welding in microelectronics. Currently, laser welding has become an affordable and reliable technology with the advent of powerful modern fiber lasers with outputs of several tens of kilowatts.

Laser welding is performed with a concentrated laser beam of high power density (more than 1 MW/cm²), and the size of the focus spot varies from 0.1 mm to 1 mm. This allows for deep welding proportional to the energy consumed (from 0.1 mm to 30 mm). The speed of laser welding is several times higher than that of arc and plasma welding.
