Origin
The tomato is a fruit, derived from the tomato plant (Solanum lycopersicum). Culinarily, the tomato is considered a vegetable. Tomatoes originated in Meso-America, where the ancestors of the Aztecs and Mayans cultivated small varieties. In 1750, tomatoes were still yellow fruits, but after various crossbreeding, they turned red.
