Origin of the Date
The date is a stone fruit from the date palm (Phoenix dactylifera), which can be eaten fresh or dried. Stone fruits are types of fruit that have a hard, stone-like core or pit. The date is a cylindrical fruit, measuring 5 to 7 centimeters in length. The color varies from bright red to bright yellow.
Dates grow in large clusters on these trees and are harvested in November and December. Around 30 dates can grow on these clusters, and each tree can yield between 20 and 150 kilograms of dates.
Cultivation began about 3000 years ago in the Middle East. Date palms thrive in a dry climate with moist soil. There are as many as 400 varieties of dates. These dried date pieces from Pakistan are available year-round. Dried dates are rich in vitamins A and B, iron, magnesium, and phosphorus.
