Staining

Pickling stainless steel removes impurities such as welding scale, oxide layers, heat tint, foreign rust, and metallic components and organic contaminants pressed into the surface during mechanical processing. Only with clean, metallically pure surfaces can the passive layer, which protects the stainless steel from corrosion, be formed. Pickling results in a uniformly matte, whitish sheen on the surface.
