Cast iron with spheroidal graphite combines good castability with toughness and tensile strength values that are similar to those of steel. Cast iron with spheroidal graphite generally exhibits better mechanical properties than cast iron with lamellar graphite. This is because the graphite inclusions are spherical rather than lamellar. This spherical geometry is achieved by adding small amounts of cerium, calcium, or magnesium during the melting process.
