Centrifugal Separator (Cyclones) Centrifugal separators, sometimes referred to as cyclones, cyclone separators, cyclone filters, or whirlers, are used in large-scale industrial systems to separate solid or liquid particles contained in gases (for example, dust).
A centrifugal separator essentially consists of four parts: the inlet cylinder (top), the cone (middle), the particle collection container (hopper, bottom), and the dip tube (mounted centrally from above in the inlet cylinder).
In the inlet cylinder, the gas/particle mixture or liquid/particle mixture is directed onto a circular path by tangential injection. Due to the narrowing of the subsequent cone, the rotational speed increases to such an extent that the particles are flung against the cone walls by centrifugal force and slowed down enough to detach from the flow and cascade down into the collection container.
