The design with segmented film gives this series a significant advantage: Under moderate but continuous overload—especially in the case of overvoltage—the damaged and short-circuited sectors are isolated from the circuit one by one. Thus, in most cases, the capacitor does not cause a short circuit in the intermediate circuit but ends up in the 'open' mode.
