In this process, a nickel layer is first applied as a diffusion barrier to the copper on the areas and vias designated for the final surface using an electroless method. In the second step, a thin gold top layer is added. The functionality of the gold reliably prevents nickel oxidation and significantly contributes to the excellent solderability of the ENIG surface, even after long storage periods of the printed circuit boards.
