Damaged areas and poor connections to the base material are indicated by flaking and blistering. Consolidation beams before coating induce compressive residual stresses and prevent crack propagation from the spray layer into the base material. Smoothing beams after coating reduce the porosity in the spray layer and improve surface quality.
