Definition Already in ancient times, distillation was used to obtain essential oils or to purify seawater into drinking water. Since the early modern period, distillation has been specifically employed for the production of pharmaceuticals. Distillates are obtained through a thermal process in which volatile substances are separated from less volatile materials. Typically, no solvents or adsorbents need to be added during distillation. The starting material is brought to a boil – during this process, the volatile substances accumulate in the resulting vapor.
