At the end of the 60s and the beginning of the 70s, the first arch-shaped halls were manufactured and assembled in Twello, Netherlands, under the company name Smit Loodsen- en Timmerfabrik (Quinsettloods, Romneyloods). In the following years, a distribution network was established in Germany, initially in northern Germany, later nationwide, but also in Austria and Switzerland. The portfolio was expanded to include gable roof halls and round roof halls.
In early 1984, a German subsidiary was founded at the current location under the name Smit Loodsen- en Timmerfarbrik GmbH. A few years later, the company was renamed Smit-Systemhallen GmbH.
In the 90s, production in the Netherlands was discontinued. Manufacturing was outsourced to external companies. However, sales and assembly continued to be carried out from the locations in Twello and Vreden.
In early 2003, the Twello location was largely abandoned. Since then, sales and assembly have primarily been conducted from the new location at Karl-Benz-Straße 1 in Vreden.
After the passing of the main shareholders Ino and Wim Smit, Mrs. Jannie Smit-Lamsma is now the sole shareholder. Long-time employee Mr. Erwin Wißing has been appointed as managing director.
