Reed Roller

Reed rolls are cylindrical structures that are pre-cultivated with bank and marsh plants for erosion protection. Reed rolls are made of densely compressed coconut fiber, encased in a synthetic fiber net tube. Depending on the intended use, they are pre-planted with 10 species of reeds per linear meter and cultivated over a growing season. The standard length of a reed roll is 3.0 m (diameter 30 cm). At the time of installation, the plants have fully rooted the roll and developed into a robust stand that cannot be washed out. Reed rolls can be combined with a muskrat grid to prevent muskrat infestation of the newly prepared bank.
