The Rubella virus is a member of the Togaviridae family, found mainly in human populations. Rubella is generally considered to be a non-serious adolescent disease. However, a maternal infection can be transmitted to the fetus through the placenta, causing congenital rubella. A primary rubella infection contracted during the early stages of pregnancy can have serious consequences such as severe damage to the fetus, stillbirth or miscarriage.
