A Frankish garrison settled on this strategic hill, which was named "Ad Francos" (literally meaning "home of the Franks"), giving its name to the present-day village of Francs. The château, built between the 9th and 18th centuries, is an eclectic jewel of Romanesque and Gothic architecture.
