The main application of calcium hypochlorite is the disinfection of water. It is widely used in two main ways; to disinfect swimming pool and disinfect drinking water. This compound has little residue as it is highly soluble in water. When used to disinfect the swimming pool water, it is usually mixed with other chemicals that have low chlorine content to prevent reaction with choline. It is a highly effective in helping get chemical compounds and pungent smell in swimming pools due its high chlorine content.

The substance is not reactive with most of the naturally occurring elements. However, it reacts with sodium bicarbonate to form a thick blanket of carbon dioxide. A foam stabilizer is added to the reaction to create a viable carbon dioxide layer that can effectively lock out oxygen from the burning material. This is the most common substance in many fire extinguishers used in Japan and India.

Ferric alum appears as a white powder or crystalline. The crystalline and powder forms of the substance are soluble in water. However, it is not soluble in organic solvent such as ethanol. When in water, the solution appears clears and does not form a residue. Both of them are not toxic and do not catch flames. However, it can present an environmental hazard if spread in a large area.

The chemical appears as a white or light grey powder, tablets, granules or a mixed powder. It reacts in both water and alcohol with some level of solubility. It does not have any strong odors. In addition, it melts around 100 degrees Celsius into an aqueous form.
